Grant funds will help create 14 new affordable sober housing units for individuals in advanced recovery in Allston. Establishing a strong sober home community culture is critical to success in recovery. All MASH-certified sober homes are required to have comfortable living space, with a common living area, designated living and sleeping areas that meet our requirements for square footage, bathrooms that accommodate the home’s maximum capacity. MASH-certified sober homes must also offer a peer-based environment and be drug- and alcohol-free.

BOSTON – November 17, 2022 – MassHousing has awarded a total of $143,332 in grant funding to help preserve 22 affordable sober housing units and provide supportive services to men, women, and children impacted by substance misuse. For most recovering addicts, Massachusetts sober living homes provide the smooth transitional step from treatment back into society without giving so much freedom that there is an increased risk of relapse. Residents of a sober house are required to pay rent, attend school or work, continue regular meetings at support groups and take part in regular household chores. They do many of the same things that they would be expected to do on their own but in an environment where they can receive added support from their peers who are also in recovery and working toward a common goal of lifelong sobriety.

Other proposals that provide services for residents in MassHousing-financed rental housing, specifically those that address alcohol and/or drug abuse or addiction, are also considered for funding. CCRI grant recipients must be 501c3 non-profit organizations and matching funds must be provided. All proposals and applicant qualifications are stringently reviewed and vetted by MassHousing. The grants come from the Center for Community Recovery Innovations, Inc. (CCRI), a nonprofit subsidiary corporation of MassHousing that helps nonprofits create or preserve affordable sober housing in Massachusetts for individuals in recovery. MASH Certified Sober Homes

Certified sober homes have comfortable spaces for living, sleeping, and engaging with peers, all of which make them valuable and safe spaces for recovery.
